You cannot be serious

How deliciously controversial, how fabulously brave, how gorgeously clever!

I have a couple of suggestions for your next event:

– how pedophilia is morally justified

– how female genital mutilation is morally justified

– how wife beating is morally justified

– how torture, deprivation of liberty and murder is morally justified

Go on, I dare you

Mozilla Epic Fail

April 4, 2014

Mozilla is a free software community that produces a number of products including the internet browser Firefox. The company is famous for its tolerance of diversity but obviously only the right kind of diversity!

Mozilla’s CEO and co-founder Brendan Eich has had to step down following a furore over his same-sex marriage views. Apparently that kind of thinking is not to be tolerated! From an exclusive cnet interview:

Brendan Eich knew there would be challenges taking over as Mozilla chief executive — competing with Chrome, rebuilding the Web as a foundation for apps, finding a mobile foothold for Firefox OS.

What he didn’t expect was that a political issue would push aside those technology concerns. Eich’s donation of $1,000 to the Proposition 8 effort to ban gay marriage in California, made in 2008 and uncovered through public records in 2012, became a rallying point for a large and vocal group that has fought for years for those marriage rights. More than 70,000 people have signed a petition asking for Eich to resign if he can’t unequivocally say he supports marriage equality.

Now, in his first interview on the subject, Eich is responding with a message that Mozilla is at its core inclusive — not just of gay-marriage supporters but also of people like him or gay-marriage opponents in Indonesia who also are part of the Mozilla cause. Those beliefs must be checked at the door on the way into Mozilla, he argues.

In a statement on their blog, Mozilla expose their hypocrisy, cowardice and ironically their intolerance. People, do you know what freedom of speech actually means?

Epic fail Mozilla, I’m now in the market for a new browser.

Work on Wednesday

March 27, 2014

I’m pleased to report that Tim Blair’s Work on Wednesday movement was a resounding success! People came out in their millions to support the principle of . . . you know, going to work.

The twitter feed @workonwednesday was in meltdown yesterday and #workonwednesday seriously trended (not really sure about that as I was working and couldn’t check but it’s a pretty safe bet).

Tim has posted photos of demonstrators (“The Workers”) showing their support for the cause and because he’s like that, he’s also posted photos of demonstrators demonstrating against the demonstration (“The Marchers”). Big chuckleathon . . .

March of the Witless

March 24, 2014

After the endless drama caused by those famous “Ditch the Witch” and “Bob Brown’s Bitch” signs, you’d think the media would have been completely outraged by the signs at the various protests around the country. Appears not.

Compare the photos published by the ABC’s coverage of the event with these. Different much?

Tim Blair has been taking the mickey out of the protests and has now organised a counter-demonstration called Work on Wednesday. I’m planning on joining and I highly recommend you do to. It’s for a worthy cause. To quote Timmy . . .

Is Feminism the new Misogyny?

March 12, 2014

I believe that women can and should be able to do anything and everything. No I take that back, I believe all people can and should be able to do anything and everything. The caveat I have to that statement is of course not all people can do anything and everything. Individuals have varying aptitudes, academic accomplishment, physical capabilities, ambition, lifestyle outlooks ad infinitum. This leads to individuals making choices – very different choices.

So while I ardently believe in equality, I hate the term “feminist”. It is not a pro-choice philosophy in the sense of individuals being able to make individual choices. It has in fact come to represent a humourless intolerance towards women making choices that do not adhere to the feminist manifesto. I would go so far as to say it is a type of misogyny. Read more…

Alpha vs Beta

March 4, 2014

The beta-boy Obama vs alpha-man Putin meme is not new but has recently been reinvigorated by the “events” in the Ukraine.
