Old Blighty

May 9, 2010

Britain’s election seems to have been a bit of a shambles. There was apparently chaos at polling booths with hundreds of voters unable to vote due to the queues with some booths running out of ballot papers! It appears many people were turned away because of an evening rush of voters arriving after work. Who holds their election on a Thursday?

Well lucky for us The Weekend Australian asked the Electoral Commission just that question:

When The Weekend Australian asked the Electoral Commission why its elections are held on Thursdays, the answer after much research was “we don’t know”.

The practice began in 1931 and a spokesman for the commission could only offer the theory that at that time Thursday was market day, when people came to town to do their shopping, so it was easier to vote then.

Alrighty then . . . way to modernise!
