Where’s the nuclear Armageddon we were promised?

March 24, 2011

It has been ten or so days since the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Tens of thousands of lives have been lost and the utter destruction of buildings and infrastructure is hard to imagine. In spite of  this, the media decided to focus almost exclusively on the far more exciting damage to the Fukushima nuclear facility and the possibility of a “nuclear catastrophe”. Armageddon talk was everywhere, facts were nowhere. Previous discussion of this outrage here.

Well unfortunately for the media, the “catastrophe” has failed to eventuate. In fact it appears that the nuclear facility is boringly under control although that doesn’t seem to be making the news. Well that’s just not good enough! I want to know where’s the Armageddon I was promised?

For those interested in the actual current status of the 6 reactors and the actual timeline of events over the last 10 days, the Wall Street Journal has produced a great summary which I have unashamedly “borrowed” from BraveNewClimate.

    Patience ladies patience.
At last report, the outside of the containment was about the temperature of your oven on clean and inside it’s filled with radioactive boiling concentrated brine trying to corrode its way out under pressure.
You could still get your wish.
